About Me

My scientific career has been quintessentially multidisciplinary: I earned a BSc in Chemistry at the University in Oviedo (Spain), after which I took a masters degree in computational physics at the University of Manchester, followed by a doctorate in applied statistics at the University of Oxford. Since the end of my doctorate I have focused on developing deep learning and artificial intelligence algorithms for protein engineering. Currently, I am an Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellow, supported by Schmidt Futures.

Research Interests

My research interest is focused around protein engineering, the subtle art of manipulating proteins to imbue them with desirable properties. I am interested in developing deep learning algorithms to predict properties.

My focus is on developing large language models trained on protein sequences to predict protein properties in silico and sidestep the need for expensive experimental testing. Recently, I published the first protein language model trained on cDNA, the Codon adaptation Language Model (CaLM), which showed state-of-the-art performance across a variety of tasks in protein engineering.
