About Me

CURRENTLY
I am a studying at Oxford University for a DPhil in Statistics under the guidance of Charlotte Deane. However, I still think of myself as a biochemist and my main area of research is in protein folding. So far I have been working with 2D HP models, trying to identify the sequence and structure characteristics of co-translationally folded proteins. This work has been expanded into a 3D cubic latttice with the help of Martin Mann. Martin and I are currently working on creating more 'realistic' protein lattice models and lattice based energy functions. For the time being we are refering to this work as SOPHAB-C. On top of this I am also interested in trying to identify N-terminal structure-space restriction from amino acid and mRNA sequences.

BACKGROUND
I grew up in the northern outpost of Crewe before moving to Oxford to study biochemistry as an undergraduate. This gave me two great insights:
1. Biochemistry is extremely interesting
2. Wet labs and myself did not make a productive partnership. Hence, I'm still working on biochemical problems but using a computer; thank God for modern technology!

OUTSIDE THE LAB
I do numerous exciting things with the rest of my life. Mostly these involve football, charity work, beer, pub quizzes or a mixture of the four. Football, the love of my life, I play up to four times a week during the rare periods when I haven't done myself an horrific injury (dislocated knee cap,  broken both arms, cruciates...). I'm currently the proud captain of Wolfson College FC. Last year I was President of TravelAid (charity no.1092061) and this year I'm taking over the accounting as well as becoming a Trustee. In the past year I set up a project in Cambodia and 'TravelAided' Nepal. I also work with KEEN (charity no.299786) which runs events for children and young adults with special needs. Beer relates to any real ale and pub quizzes are self explanatory!
