Projects

Each year a number of projects are developed by members of the group in collaboration with colleagues around Oxford and overseas, such that a well-formulated project description is ready well in advance of the summer school. The key criteria for choosing projects include: realism; level of planning; potential value of the results of the project; skills gained by the students (e.g. data analysis, programming, statistics, modeling and simulation); how well aligned the projects are with the research interests of the organisers; extensibility for future research.

Three students are assigned to each project, based upon their background and areas of expertise. The supervisors are available each day to meet with students and discuss progress and to help with any difficulties.

The projects are computational in nature, but may involve collaboration with experimental biologists. Students are asked to prepare a written report at the end of the six weeks detailing the methodology used and explaining the implementation and results. These reports form the basis for any future follow-up work on the project, and in many cases may have the potential to lead to a scientific publication. The students are also asked to give two presentations to the rest of the group detailing their progress on the project, and to prepare a poster for presentation at the end of the summer.

Projects for 2012 are currently being finalised; meanwhile, take a look at the projects from 2011.
