The packages have now (May 2012) been converted to run with recent versions of R and Windows 7. They will still run under Windows XP. There are two programs available: one to enter chant data and one for analysis. The former is in directory dentry, the latter in directory analysis. Each directory contains a file setup.exe which controls the installation. When you run the setup programs, the programs are by default put in c:\program files\chantmdi and c:\program files\analyse respectively, and two entries under Chant Programs are added to the start menu. I think installation works on Windows XP and Windows 7. I have no Vista to try it on. There are often problems with fonts. If the font does not work properly even after restarting, install it by hand. First get the file stgall.ttf from one of the CAB's. Open the CAB by double-clicking and then right click on stgall.ttf. Then select Extract. On Windows XP go to the Control Panel and find the Fonts (in Category view, it is under Appearance and Themes, on the left under See Also), and use the Install Font option on the File menu. On Windows 7, just right click on the font file and select Install. You may need a restart after this. If you get copying errors on Windows 7 for various system files, just click Ignore. The already installed files should be good enough. But I've left them in the distribution in case they are needed for Windows XP installation. The analysis program requires the statistical package R to do the cluster analysis and the statconn system. The easiest way to install these is to go to rcom.univie.ac.at/download.html and click on Download RAndFriendsSetup2150V3.2-7-1 or similar. This will install too much, but at least it will install enough, easily. Note carefully the licences for RExcel and statconnDCOM. The file chant.chm in this directory is the help file for the system: it will be included with each program automatically, but if you simply want to see what the program can do, I suggest you download the help file and have a look at it: download then double-click on it. The directory src contains the source code for the programs in the file src.zip. Various needed files will be found in the CAB's or installed versions. Development can be done under Windows 7 if Visual Basic 6 is installed. I followed the instructions at http://www.fortypoundhead.com/showcontent.asp?artid=20502 and it worked for me. Alternatively, use the recommended method and install under xp-mode. The source provided is for Windows XP: I had to re-add the ActiveX controls to the packages myself to use it under Windows 7. If you do multiple installations the uninstall will not work properly. Previous installations will remain in the list of programs in the Add/Remove program screen or similar. To remove the older ones later, on Windows 7 this just requires many OK responses to the error messages. On Win XP I think it needs registry edits. I think it would be worth changing to use InnoSetup or something similar. Ruth Ripley ruth@stats.ox.ac.uk 22 May 2012
