Research environment and training
Research Environment
The department runs weekly seminar series in statistics (including probability and operational research), and in statistical genetics and bioinformatics. There is also a weekly graduate lecture, involving snapshots of the research interests of the department. Members of the department also run a weekly seminar in combinatorics in the Mathematical Institute and journal clubs, including a regular one in human population genetics. There is a regular stream of short and long term academic visitors. Seminars on statistically-related topics in medicine, economics, environmental studies, social studies and other fields are regular features elsewhere in the University.
An important part of the department's activities is collaboration with researchers elsewhere in Oxford. The Statistical Consulting Service is involved with around 100 research projects each year. Some of these projects provide useful experience for graduate students.
Graduate training
Graduate training is an important part of the Department's research mission. As well as the activities mentioned above, there are reading courses for research students. Formal lecture courses are also available, for example from the MSc in Applied Statistics, from the 4th year undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics courses, and from the Doctoral Training Centres.
A broad structured program of training in modern statistical methodology is available via courses in the Academy for Postgraduate Training in Statistics (APTS), of which the Department was a founding member.
