Biographical sketch
I am a postdoctoral research assistant in the Experimental Statistics Laboratory of Dr Rory Bowden, working on the UK CRC Modernising Medical Microbiology Consortium project to understand the evolution and transmission of health-care associated microbial pathogens. Prior to joining the laboratory, I was completing a PhD under the supervision of Prof. Anthony Larkum, A/Prof Michael Charleston and A/Prof Murray Henwood at the University of Sydney. My research involved investigating genome evolution in Prochlorococcus and marine Synechococcus, cyanobacteria that share a common ancestor but have different light-harvesting antenna systems likely to have been acquired through lateral gene transfer. My previous educational and work experience includes an honours degree in Computer Science, work as a software engineer in the finance industry, and a master of applied science in bioinformatics.
Research interests
Genome evolution, lateral gene transfer, evolution of photosynthesis in cyanobacteria, phylogenetic analysis.
About my research
My role in the group is as a bioinformatician, building software infrastructure to support the analysis of high-throughput genomic data and carrying out analysis that reveals the evolutionary mechanisms by which the genomes of microbial pathogens evolve.
