Gutiérrez-Toscano Prize 2013
The Gutiérrez-Toscano Prize 2013 for the best performance in the MSc in Applied Statistics was awarded jointly to San Chye Cheng and Michele Nguyen.

Department of Statistics Prizes 2013
Congratulations to Samiha Ismail and Jamie Potter who were awarded Department of Statistics prizes for their outstanding performances in Mathematics and Statistics Part C and also to Xiaoyu Lu for her performance in Mathematics and Statistics Part B.

Corcoran Memorial Prize 2012
The Corcoran Prize 2012,  for outstanding work by a graduate student in Statistics in the twelve terms prior to October 2012, has been awarded to Robin J Ryder, The Queen’s College, for his DPhil thesis entitled
Phylogenetic Models of Language Diversification.

EPSRC grants
Professor Gesine Reinert, Professor Alison Etheridge and Dr Matthias Winkel have all recently been awarded grants by the EPSRC.

Samuel S Wilks Memorial Award
Congratulations to Visiting Professor Kanti Mardia on being awarded the Samuel S Wilks Memorial Award from the American Statistical Association this year. Previous winners include Peter Hall, Stephen Fienberg, Paul Meier, Donald Rubin, Bradley Efron, C.R. Rao, Theodore W. Anderson,W. Edwards Deming, George E.P. Box, and John W. Tukey.

Visiting Professor
Professor Kanti Mardia, Senior Research Professor at the University of Leeds, has recently been awarded the title of Visiting Professor in Statistics at Oxford and will be a regular visitor to our Department. Professor Mardia was awarded the RSS Silver Medal in 2003. He has wide-ranging research interests including Directional Statistics, Multivariate Analysis, Shape Analysis and Spatial Statistics with emphasis on applications. He is currently focusing on new Statistics of Structural Bioinformatics. He is the founder and the current Chairman of the Leeds Annual Statistical Research (LASR) workshops. The 32nd Workshop in this series takes place this year, 2-4 July.

Guy Medal awarded
Congratulations to Professor Brian Ripley on his Royal Statistical Society award, the Guy Medal in Silver.

'1000 genomes barrier' broken


Philip Leverhulme Prize
Congratulations to Dr Jonathan Marchini on winning a Philip Leverhulme Prize. These prizes, with a value of £70, 000 each, are awarded to outstanding scholars who have made a substantial and recognised contribution to their particular field of study, recognised at an international level, and where the expectation is that their greatest achievement is yet to come.

Lecture for sixth formers
The second of the Lecture Series in Mathematics and Statistics for sixth-formers took place at Magdalen College on 14 November 2012.  Dr Dorothy Buck talked about The Knotty Maths of Medicine.

EPSRC fellowship
Professor Arnaud Doucet has been awarded an advanced EPSRC Fellowship, allowing him to concentrate on research for the next 5 years.
