Configuring Outlook 2010

This section explains how to configure Microsoft Outlook 2010 to read and send e-mail from the Department's servers. It is NOT for those using University Nexus accounts.

  • Open Outlook (Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Outlook 2010)
  • The first time you start Outlook you will be presented with the Microsoft Outlook 2010 Startup window, click on Next >
  • On the Account Configuration window, select Yes and click on Next >
  • On the Add New Account window, check the Manually configure server settings... option
  • Next >
  • Select the Internet E-mail option
  • Next >
  • Type in the following information related to your e-mail account:
    • Your Name (e.g. John Smith)
    • E-mail Address (e.g.
    • Account Type: IMAP
    • Incoming mail server:
    • Outgoing mail server (SMTP):
    • User Name (e.g. testuser)
    • Password: leave empty
  • Uncheck the Remember password option


  • More Settings...
  • On the Internet E-mail Settings window, click on the Advanced tab
  • Under the Incoming server (IMAP) section, change the encrypted connection to SSL (port number should change to 993)
  • Under the Outgoing server (SMTP) section, change the encrypted connection to SSL (port number will remain 25)
  • Change the Outgoing server (SMTP) port number from 25 to 465

Outlook Port Settings

  • OK
  • On the Add New Account window, Next >
  • After a few seconds the system will test the account and ask you for your password; type it in and click OK
  • Once the tests have been successful, click Close on the Test Account Settings window
  • Finish
  • After a bit of processing Outlook will ask you to log in:
    • User Name (e.g. testuser)
    • Password (your Departmental password)


  • OKOn left-hand pane of the Outlook window, under Mail Folders, you will now have a (or whatever your e-mail address is) entry you can expand to view your Inbox
